What Are the Nine Body Constitution Types?

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) recognizes nine distinct body constitution types. Each type describes a pattern of physical traits, emotional tendencies, and health vulnerabilities. Understanding your type helps you choose foods, exercises, and daily habits that keep you balanced.

The Nine Types

1. Balanced (Pinghe)

People with a balanced constitution have plenty of energy, sleep well, and adapt easily to changes. Their skin is healthy, their appetite is steady, and they rarely get sick.

2. Qi-Deficient (Qixu)

Common signs include easy fatigue, shortness of breath, soft voice, and frequent colds. Gentle exercise, warm cooked foods, and regular rest are especially important.

3. Yang-Deficient (Yangxu)

Cold hands and feet, preference for warm drinks, low energy, and loose stools often point to yang deficiency. Keep the lower back and feet warm, and avoid raw cold foods.

4. Yin-Deficient (Yinxu)

Dry skin, night sweats, a thin body, and a warm sensation in the palms and soles suggest yin deficiency. Nourishing, moistening foods and good sleep help restore yin.

5. Phlegm-Damp (Tanshi)

A heavy body, oily skin, sticky stools, and a feeling of fullness are typical. Reduce greasy, sweet foods and add light physical activity.

6. Damp-Heat (Shire)

Oily face, bitter taste, dark urine, and skin problems may indicate damp-heat. Bitter melon, mung beans, and avoiding alcohol help clear heat and dampness.

7. Blood-Stasis (Xueyu)

Dull skin, dark circles, purplish lips, and a tendency toward fixed pain are signs of blood stasis. Movement, warmth, and foods that promote circulation are useful.

8. Qi-Stagnation (Qiyu)

Frequent sighing, mood swings, chest tightness, and insomnia suggest qi stagnation. Breathing exercises, walking, and talking with friends can smooth the flow of qi.

9. Special Diathesis (Tebing)

This refers to allergic or sensitive constitutions. People may react to pollen, foods, or medications. Avoiding known triggers and strengthening the body gradually is key.
